Prosser holds off Top-Hi for CWAC title

October 30, 2010 by YH-R Sports

PROSSER, Wash. — Prosser is back in a familiar spot — league champions and state-bound.

Prosser limited Toppenish’s high-powered running game to 105 yards and Isaac Anderson’s third-quarter touchdown proved the difference as the Mustangs held on for a 14-12 victory Friday night at Art Fiker Stadium.

Fifth-ranked Prosser (8-0 league, 8-1 overall) clinched the CWAC crown, its 22nd league title in 24 years, and earned a bye in the CWAC-Great Northern regional games next week, advancing directly into the Class 2A state bracket.

That was made possible primarily because the Mustangs defense shut down Toppenish’s dynamic rushing tandem of Carlos Ramirez and Ivan Macias, who came into the game averaging a combined 268 yards per game and 9.2 yards per carry.

Friday, the two managed a mere 73 total yards, 51 by Ramirez, for a 2.7 yards-per-carry average. Overall, Toppenish collected 105 rushing yards on 52 carries, a 2.0 per-carry average.

Still, the Wildcats managed to hold a 12-7 lead at halftime as Ramirez scored on a 5-yard run, and he also caught a 29-yard scoring pass from Daniel Maldonado, both coming in the second quarter.

That changed in the third as Anderson capped an 83-yard drive with a 4-yard scoring run. Prosser got on the board in the first quarter when Dominic Garza caught a 32-yard scoring pass from Ryan Fassler, his only pass attempt in the game.
