Prosser Mustang recap |

No Moore, still no doubt as Prosser drubs SouthridgeThis story was published Saturday, September 1st, 2007 By Rene Ferran, Herald staff writer The Kellen Moore show has shuffled off to Boise, but the Prosser football program keeps rolling along. The Mustangs racked up 403 yards total offense Saturday night in a 33-7 season-opening nonleague victory over Southridge at Lampson Stadium. In fact, if it's possible, the Mustangs may be even more difficult to defend with their record-setting quarterback now running the scout team offense at Boise State University. At least with Moore under center, a defense knew on whom to focus. This game, the Mustangs rotated Cody Bruns and Jordan Durbin under center. When Bruns was at quarterback, they threw in some spread option to their usual array of looks, while with Durbin, they were a more traditional dropback attack - but with Bruns, a record-setting receiver, now a threat on the perimeter. "They're tough to prepare for," said Suns coach Andy Troxel, whose team lost 69-7 last year to Prosser. "You knew they weren't going to do what they did with Kellen. They've got a ton of speed." And the Mustangs showed it off often. Senior Cade Wandling, the 2A state champion in the 100 meters, caught Prosser's first touchdown pass on a 37-yard streak from Bruns and returned an interception 48 yards for the game's final score. Senior Drake Washington, who ran a leg on the Mustangs' state champion 4x100 relay team, rushed for 99 yards on 18 carries. Bruns, who also was on that relay, ran the ball four times for 18 yards, caught three passes for 33 yards, and was 8-of-13 for 119 yards, two TDs and an interception. Bruns is enjoying his dual role this season. "Whatever helps the team the most," he said. "It gives the defense two different looks to prepare for." Southridge's preparations went out the window early on when its Nos. 1 and 2 fullbacks went out with injuries. Starter Tyler Hirai pulled a hamstring playing linebacker on Prosser's first play, and Tate Stiles suffered a concussion on his only carry on Southridge's first drive. With junior Andrew Mendenhall making his first career start at quarterback, changing on the fly took time to take flight. The Suns had just 21 yards total offense at halftime. "All of the things we'd worked on all summer, and now we had to readjust our game plan," Troxel said. "It took us until the second half to adjust." By then, Prosser led 19-0 on Wandling's TD catch and a pair of Steve Natho touchdown runs of 5 and 36 yards - the latter one play after Southridge fumbled the kickoff following his first TD. Finally, in the third quarter, the Suns started clicking offensively. Devin Jones made a diving 37-yard catch at the Prosser 21, and six plays later Mendenhall found 6-foot-4 Clayton Homme in the back-right corner of the end zone with 1:38 left in the period. "You saw a much different quarterback in the second half," Troxel said of Mendenhall, who finished 9-of-18 for 90 yards. "He maturated. That first game, there's always an adjustment period. I'm proud of the way he came back in the second half." But on the first play of the fourth quarter, Prosser struck back. Kirby Moore streaked past his defender down the right sideline and hauled in a Bruns pass for a 40-yard touchdown. "We felt we'd been throwing the hitch all night, so we figured we'd take a shot and it paid off," Bruns said.
