Moore burns Suns at Qwest Field

SEATTLE — Kellen Moore didn't wait long to remind Cody Bruns how happy he is to have him back.

What looked to almost be a broken play — Moore bobbled the ball trying to execute play action — turned into the start of another robust day for the Prosser quarterback and his favorite target. He found Bruns wide open behind the defense for an 84-yard
touchdown pass to start off the Mustangs' romp against Southridge at Qwest Field.

The long strike, which was followed by Nick Boydston's 26-yard interception return of Suns quarterback Jason Munns' first pass only 13 seconds later, were just the beginning of a 69-7 Prosser non-league victory in the Emerald City Kickoff Classic.

"We thought we would take a chance and try to get a big one right off the bat," Moore said. "We've thrown a screen the last couple of seasons. We thought they would expect that and try to jump the screen and we'd throw over the top."

There was no need for trickery to get the quick jump; Moore could do whatever he wanted all day.

The Sun defense was full of spectators as Moore reminded it why he set state records with 4,600 yards and 66 touchdowns through the air last season. He is well on his way to matching those numbers after finishing 25 of 32 for 407 yards and seven touchdowns. The senior play caller even scrambled uncharacteristically for 33 yards for the first TD after halftime, making the score 55-7 with two more touchdown passes to come.

"I could hear his mom from the stands," Prosser coach Tom Moore said. "She was yelling for him to get down."

Southridge never regrouped after the two quick strikes — Moore to Bruns occurred only 11 seconds in with the interception return making it 13-0 with 11:21 remaining in the first quarter. From there Moore found Bruns three more times in the end zone, Kirby Moore twice and Josh Beck once to send the Suns back home wondering how to stop such a powerful offense.

"Ours last year," said Southridge coach Andy Troxel when asked if he had ever seen an offense clicking like Prosser's did. "You can't simulate speed like that in practice."

Munns had his own trouble with the Prosser defense. The BYU recruit, who passed for 1,685 yards and 26 touchdowns last year, finished 4 of 10 for 32 yards and an interception. The Mustangs often forced him to use his feet and that left him on the sidelines in the second half after one of his five rushes for 48 yards left him with a hip pointer. He took a brutal blind-side hit before the break — forcing his second fumble of the day — but expects to be fine next week.

Moore and Bruns reestablished the pass-catch chemistry to two had before Bruns broke his ankle against Bellevue in last year's Class 3A state quarterfinals. Bruns caught 98 passes for 1,644 yards and 23 touchdowns last year and finished with 10 catches for 269 yards on Saturday — including TD grabs of 84, 17 61 yards. Moore did spread the ball around, though, finding eight different receivers.

Southridge, which is ranked third in Class 3A by The Seattle Times, got its lone touchdown when Dylan Jones pounded into the end zone from 13 yards out to make it 28-7 with 4:34 left in the first quarter. The Suns stopped the Prosser offense just three times on the day — twice after Moore and his fellow starters left the game early in the fourth quarter.

Even when they did stop Mustangs, the Suns still suffered, muffing the only chance they had at a punt return all day for their sixth turnover — three fumbles, three interceptions. Prosser never committed a turnover and had a strong ground game with 165 totals yards — led by Jarod Leighty's 47 yards on nine carries. Moore was also a perfect 6 of 6 in the second half.

But what the Mustangs know they have more than anything is Moore and Bruns back together and clicking like the wideout never missed a snap.

"I couldn't wait," Bruns said of getting back on the field. "I watched the (Rainier Beach) and the state game and it was tough. I spent all offseason working to get back and throwing with Kellen."

Moore thanked him for that dedication right away.

Kickoff Classic Roundup | Moore, Bruns dismantle Southridge

Special to The Seattle Times

It was supposed to be a showdown between two of the state's best high-school quarterbacks.

As much as the two quarterbacks wanted to avoid the hype, this game was billed as the showdown between Prosser's Kellen Moore, who set several state passing records as a junior, and Class 4A Southridge's Jason Munns, a Brigham Young recruit.

But instead of being the tale of two quarterbacks Saturday, the two people putting on a show were both wearing Prosser uniforms. Moore connected with junior receiver Cody Bruns for three first-quarter touchdowns as the Mustangs crushed Southridge 69-7 in the Emerald City Kickoff Classic at Qwest Field.

Munns, on the other hand, was slowed by a hip injury suffered in the first quarter, and left the game after a blind-side sack late in the second quarter. He said he would be able to play next week.

Moore, a 6-foot-1, 180-pound senior, finished the game 25 for 32 for 407 yards and seven touchdowns with no interceptions. He had 303 yards and five touchdowns in the first half as the Mustangs, the top-ranked 2A team, built a 49-7 lead. Bruns finished with 10 catches for 269 yards, including eight for 201 yards in the first half. His first three catches in the first quarter were touchdowns of 84, 17 and 61 yards.

The two teamed up for spectacular numbers last year as well, but Moore had to play without his best receiver to end the season after Bruns sprained an ankle in the state quarterfinals.

"We've got a comfort level between each other," said Moore. "We understand what the other is thinking on the field."

For Bruns, it was an offseason of anticipation after watching his team's final two games, including a loss to Ferndale in the 3A state-championship game.

Bruns didn't have to wait long to get back into the action, catching an 84-yard touchdown pass on the game's first play.

"I couldn't wait to get back out there," he said. "Watching the Rainier Beach game and the state final was tough. It was nice to get back."

SEATTLE -- Perhaps everyone should have seen Prosser's 69-7 romp over Southridge at Saturday's Emerald City Kickoff Classic at Qwest Field coming.

After all, the Mustangs returned six starters on each side of the ball from last year's 3A state runner-up, including their cadre of skill position players led by record-setting quarterback Kellen Moore and receiver Cody Bruns.

They also saw this as a long-awaited chance to take on one of the big boys of the former Big Nine Conference. "All we've heard for 20 years is how we're a good small school but that we couldn't play in the Big Nine," said Mustangs coach Tom Moore, whose team dropped to the 2A classification this fall. "These kids finally got the chance to show they could play."

On the other sideline, the Suns -- the last champions of the Big Nine before joining the 3A division of the reconfigured Columbia Basin League -- were breaking in a brand new offensive line and receiving corps around BYU-bound quarterback Jason Munns, and the defense had two new starters in the secondary. "Last year at this time, we had guys who were game-ready," said Southridge coach Andy Troxel. "We knew coming in we'd be young, that there'd be some hiccups. You can't have hiccups against a team as good as that."

Still, not even the staunchest Prosser supporter could have imagined how it all transpired. Thirty-nine seconds into the game, the score was already 14-0, and after 12:10 had elapsed, it was 35-7. The Prosser offense looked as if it had been only one week, not nine months, since its last game, a 47-12 loss to Ferndale in the 3A state final.

Kellen Moore tossed three TD passes to Bruns in the first quarter on his way to a 25-of-32, 407-yard, seven-touchdown night. He spread the ball around to seven different receivers, but he most often looked toward his good buddy Bruns. Bruns, in his first game back after suffering a broken ankle in last year's state quarterfinal win over Bellevue, finished with 10 catches for 269 yards.

"We've got a comfort level between each other. We understand what the other one is thinking," Kellen said. "But everybody on the field already understood our offense. We just threw a few wrinkles in there and had some fun." The first wrinkle came on the game's first play from scrimmage. Sensing the Suns would be ready for a screen pass, the Mustangs called for a play-action bomb to Bruns. "We figured, first play, let's take a chance and go for a big one off the bat," Kellen said.

Moore nearly lost control of the ball when he was bumped by running back Bubba Hancock on the elbow, but he recovered to throw a strike to Bruns, who was 10 yards behind his defender as he raced for an 84-yard score. "I couldn't wait for this game," Bruns said. "Watching the Rainier Beach (semifinal) game and the state final last year was tough. It was nice to get back."

Southridge's first play, meanwhile, couldn't have gone worse. Munns took a quick drop and fired a slant pass in the right flat toward Andrew Teimouri, but Nick Boydston jumped the route and returned the interception 26 yards for a 14-0 Mustangs lead. Munns never got untracked, in part because the Prosser defense overwhelmed the young Suns offensive line, and in part because of a hip pointer suffered on their only scoring drive of the game.

On a 19-yard scramble, he got hit on the left hip. Two plays later, Dylan Jones scored on a 13-yard run, but that was the only positive on the day for Southridge, which had six turnovers and just 170 yards total offense. Munns' injury worsened, and after he was rocked by Calvin Clarke on a sack late in the second quarter, he sat out the rest of the game.

"I dealt with the pain as long as I could," said Munns, who finished 4-of-10 for 32 yards passing and rushed for 48 yards. "But I wasn't going to help the team by trying to act tough. It's a preseason game, and as much as pride means to me, it doesn't mean that much." Munns should be OK for next week's game against Richland, and already the Suns were pointing ahead to that game and the rest of the season. "We'll bounce back," Troxel said. "We're not stupid. We'll fix things. We'll make things right. Our young kids learned tonight what good teams look like."
