Moore connected on 15 of 31 passes for 306 yards for the fifth-ranked Mustangs (10-1), who will host Ellensburg in the first round of the Class 3A state tournament Saturday afternoon. Selah quarterback Kyle Washut threw three touchdown passes, two to Jake Zeutenhorst. Prosser's Ivan Merino handled his kicking and punting duties but was held out of the offense and defense to rest an injury.

Prosser explodes near half to beat SelahThis story was published Wednesday, November 9th, 2005 By Jahmal Corner Herald staff writer PROSSER -- Everyone knew Prosser could score quickly, but this was ridiculous. The Mustangs scored 26 points in six minutes and 20 seconds to effectively put away Selah in their 59-27 3A regional playoff victory Tuesday at Art Fiker Stadium. That's one touchdown per 95 seconds of game time. Quarterback Kellen Moore threw three scores on three throws during the stretch -- he finished with seven touchdown passes -- and Prosser needed only six plays to produce its four touchdowns. And after the smoke had cleared, and the Mustangs took a 39-14 lead at halftime, hardly anyone could remember that it was actually Selah which led 14-13 with 8:13 left in the second quarter. "We felt all along that we could stay with them (even after we were down) because of our potent offense," said Kellen Moore, who finished 14-of-30 for 279 yards passing and will try to duplicate his performance when Prosser faces Ellensburg in a first-round state playoff game Saturday. "We knew they would blitz the heck out of us, and we found a weak spot in their defense and stuck to it." The Vikings opened well offensively as quarterback Kyle Washut threw a 7-yard score to Jake Zeutenhorst to tie the game at 7 just before the first quarter ended. Washut gave Selah a brief advantage when he stepped into a pass that saw him drilled by three Mustangs, and hit Zach Friedrich for a 16-yard touchdown. But Kody Frank responded with a 45-yard kickoff return to put Prosser in decent position, and the rout was on. "I think we took a deep breath and let up a little bit," said Selah coach Jeff Jamieson. "They get on the ropes and they respond; they think they can win anytime." Prosser coach Tom Moore wanted to win first, then keep his guys fresh for succeeding rounds. Ivan Merino was limited to defense and kicking duties, and junior Jared "Bubba" Hancock handled most of the running load, gaining 55 yards and a TD. Practically the only Mustang who wasn't substituted at some point was Kellen, as the underclassmen got their chance to show what they had. Freshman Kirby Moore, Kellen's younger brother, showed a ton. The 6-foot-3 wide receiver hauled in five catches for 132 yards and two scores. Kellen and Kirby hooked up on some balls that made it look as though they've been playing together their whole lives -- which they have. "We played Grid Kids together," Kirby said. "And when he does any kind of signal I know what he means, because we're always on the same page." So were all of Prosser's other big-play guys. Receiver Cody Bruns had 132 yards and three touchdowns, and Frank added an 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, which wrapped up the scoring for the Mustangs with 11:40 left to play.
