SELAH — Prosser quarterback Kellen Moore wears No.
11 on the field, but all the Selah defenders
probably saw was a bull's-eye. With eight men in
the box looking to stuff the run and put pressure
on the Mustang QB, the Vikings accomplished only
one goal Friday night at Karl Graf Stadium.
They stopped the run, but Moore went wild,
completing 32 of 45 passes for 428 yards, five
touchdowns and no interceptions. That was more
than enough offense as No. 4 Prosser rolled past
Mid-Valley rival Selah 48-21.
"We knew coming in that we'd be able to throw
the ball," said Kellen Moore, whose 428 yards gave
him the third best passing game in Valley history.
He missed Andrew Thomas' Prosser school record by
six yards.
"We knew they'd be up on the line and playing
us man to man outside since they were trying to
get to me."
The game plan kept the Vikings
(4-3 overall, 1-2 in league) in the contest for a
little while. Prosser running back Ivan Merino
finished with only
51 yards on 16 rushes — although he did punch in a
1-yard run to give his team a 14-0 lead at the end
of the first quarter.
Selah rallied with a 58-yard pass from Kyle
Washut to Jake Zeutenhorst for its first score.
Then a muffed fair catch on a punt helped the
Vikings score again on a 4-yard pass from Washut
to running back Rowan Ringer.
That tied the score at 14-14 with 1:35 seconds
remaining in the first half — way too much time
for Moore.
He marched Prosser (6-1, 4-0) from its own 39
yard line on six plays, capping the drive with a
10-yard touchdown pass to Danny Lochrie for a
21-14 halftime lead. The drive started with 1:28
left on the clock and left Selah with 21 seconds.
The 2-minute offense didn't stop for the
Mustangs in the second half. They scored four
straight touchdowns — three of them on Moore
passes — to put the game out of reach. The
Vikings, however, kept battling with a 74-yard
touchdown pass from backup quarterback Britton
Goodwin to Cameron Eaton in the waning moments.
"This Selah team is good," Prosser coach Tom
Moore said. "They have tough players and they're
good up front and they have a strong run game. It
was just a numbers game. They had too many in the
box and we had to keep throwing.
"I went to college and I can do math. If you
have only six blockers and they're going to send
seven to eight guys each time, you just can't run
it."
The Mustang receivers enjoyed Kellen Moore's
strong day. Eight different players caught passes
with Lochrie and Cody Bruns leading the way with
123 and 113 yards, respectively. Bruns and Serg
Torres caught two touchdowns each.
"We tried to put pressure on them and we had
pretty good coverage," Selah coach Jeff Jamieson
said. "We just didn't make plays when they were
there and they of course are very athletic."
