PROSSER — Sophomore quarterback Kellen Moore passed for five touchdowns and 196 yards on 17-for-24 accuracy for the third-ranked Mustangs. Jorgen Gilbertson caught two of Moore's TD passes (10 and 7 yards) and Bud Sexton, Jared Hancock and Miguel Perez each caught one scoring pass. Ivan Merino returned an interception 40 yards for a score and rushed for 71 yards, second-high to Hancock's 87 rushing yards. The Mustang defense limited Selah to 93 net yards and also scored the game's first points, a first-period safety.

Prosser blanks SelahThis story was last updated Saturday, October 16th, 2004 By Jahmal Corner, Herald staff writer Just to be fair: Prosser had nine penalties Friday, including two that negated touchdowns. There. Now the Mustangs' 44-0 breeze through Selah at Fiker Stadium won't sound so flawless -- though it nearly was. Prosser (7-0, 4-0) scored its first nine points via its defense. They got a safety by stopping Selah's (4-3, 1-2) Rowan Ringer in his own end zone, then Ivan Merino returned an interception 40 yards for a score. Merino had a modest day on the ground, picking up 71 yards on 16 carries, but it was sophomore -- going on senior -- quarterback Kellen Moore who provided the explosives, tossing for five touchdowns. "It was fun out there," Moore said. "We knew that they were going to take some chances on defense, and that let our receivers get open. We just had to keep it basic." Selah's plan of blitzing the Mustangs basically backfired, as Prosser's offensive line gave Moore so much time he was practically shooting Vikings in a barrel. He found Jorgen Gilbertson from 10 yards out to give Prosser a 16-0 lead with 9:08 remaining in the half. Just before the half, receiver/kicker Bud Sexton provided the highlight of the game. After catching a 31-yard bullet at the Vikings' 10, Sexton had Selah defenders Cody Smeback and Eaton Cameron at both of his sides. But with one swift move, he ducked under Smeback and left the two defenders nearly colliding with each other as he waltzed for a 41-yard touchdown. "I saw both of them coming, and I just kind of stopped and let one of them go by," Sexton explained. Sexton, who had five catches for 84 yards, was much more impressed with his six extra points than any touchdown reception. "I was 100 percent tonight, Sexton said. "That's a long way from last year, when I was about 30 percent. The Mustangs added three touchdown drives in the second half, and their defense held serve, allowing just four Selah first downs for the game. "Coach (Doug) Fassler really had a good game plan, and the defense was really aggressive," said Prosser coach Tom Moore. "I thought we played really well all the way around." No kidding. The Mustangs even dominated halftime, as receiver Miguel Perez was crowned and named Homecoming King. He threw in five receptions and 42 yards for good measure.
