Moore reels in victory for Prosser

September 6, 2008

REDMOND — When Prosser quarterback Jordan Durbin looked up and past the huge bodies on Redmond’s defensive line, he saw Kirby Moore open again.

How Moore gets this open, when everyone — the coaches, the fans, even the parking-lot guard — knows the ball’s coming his way is just another reason he’s about two months from breaking the national touchdown record. He runs routes like they’re painted on the field.

But for a senior who has caught 64 touchdowns at Prosser, this catch was rare. Because Prosser needed this one to win.

“It has been awhile,” Moore said.

It had been two years, actually, since Moore caught a fourth-quarter winning touchdown for Prosser, which is used to leading comfortably late in games. But his 10-yard catch on an out route with three minutes left allowed Prosser, the defending Class 2A champion, to come away from Class 4A Redmond with a 34-29 win.

“We wanted to play as good a team as we could, and we did,” Prosser coach Tom Moore said. “I think our depth paid off at the end.”

Kirby Moore finished with eight catches for 177 yards and three touchdowns. He is eight TDs from breaking the state record, held by former teammate Cody Bruns, and 19 from the national record of 83.

Yet for all the yards gained in the air — Durbin threw for 256 yards, and Redmond’s David Gilbertson threw for 313 — Prosser won mostly because of two plays on Redmond punts in the fourth quarter.

Redmond led 29-20 with less than six minutes left when a bad punt snap gave Prosser the ball at the Redmond 21. Two plays later, Durbin scrambled and found Cory Christen wide open for a 22-yard TD.

Redmond stalled on the next drive, and on fourth down, Prosser’s Scott Zediker broke through the line and blocked Redmond’s punt, setting up Prosser for Moore’s winning score.

“I just went to the outside, gave him a little fake, and went inside and blocked it,” said Zediker, who also blocked a punt in the first quarter. “We had great field position after that.”

Prosser gets past Redmond with last-minute comeback

Special teams' big plays were key for 2A state champs

SPECIAL TO THE P-I

REDMOND -- Friday night's nonleague football game between the Prosser Mustangs and the home team from Redmond with the same mascot was a tight race that went neck-and-neck down to the wire.

The defending 2A state champion Prosser squad, led by quarterback Jordan Durbin and receiver Kirby Moore, overcame a late deficit to take a 34-29 lead with little more than a minute left in the game and held on for the come-from-behind win.

"Our big motto is setback-comeback, and that's how we took it," Moore said.

The 4A Redmond team burst from the gates, leading 19-6 four minutes into the second quarter behind a big passing effort from senior David Gilbertson that included a 54-yard touchdown pass to Michael Conforto.

"I was excited about our effort and our competitive nature," Redmond coach Mike Pluschke said. "I think they thought they were going to get less than they did."

Gilbertson was throwing darts, and his receivers were more than competent after the catch, but two missed extra points were a sign of trouble to come for Redmond.

It didn't come until there were less than six minutes left in the game, shortly after Redmond's Andrew Rohrbach nailed a 28-yard field goal to give his team a 29-20 lead. The play looked like it would erase the missed extra points, but it was not to be.

After holding Prosser (1-0) on an ensuing fourth down, Redmond (0-1) failed to get a first down and then botched a snap on a punt attempt, giving the ball back on their own 21-yard line.

Durbin did his best Eli Manning impression two plays later, escaping the grasp of two Redmond defenders before finding a wide-open Cory Christen in the end zone.

A missed extra point by Prosser set the score at 29-26.

Redmond used just 52 seconds on its next possession before Scott Zediker blocked another punt attempt by the home team, giving the visitors the ball deep in Redmond territory.

"Special teams are a big part of the game, and they can change the game," Zediker said. "They aren't glorious, but when something like that happens, they are."

Durbin found Anthony Flores for a big third-down conversion and then connected with Moore for the pair's third touchdown and the lead.

Prosser's Matt Young intercepted Gilbertson to seal the win.

"Anthony Flores made a big first-down catch over here, and Matt Young made a big interception," Moore said. "A lot of people are going to know who they are. We had a great team last year, but we have a new team and new goals."

Pluschke was disappointed with the results of the game, but not with the effort his team showed.

"We got to see what it was like to play a playoff game in week one," he said. "I'm excited about the rest of our season, but we've got to go back and learn and make corrections, especially in special teams."

Moore's 14 catches for 191 yards and three touchdowns, along with Durbin's line of 22- for-31 for 297 yards and four scores, paced the winners. The three scores give Moore 64 in his career, 20 away from the national record.

Gilbertson finished 20-for- 29 with 316 yards, three touchdowns and one interception for Redmond.
