Prosser 48, Othello 13This story was last updated Saturday, October 23rd, 2004 By Mark McKenna, Herald staff writer OTHELLO -- The Prosser Mustangs just keep on racking up the yards, points and victories. The state's third-ranked 3A team kept its perfect season intact Friday night by whipping the Othello Huskies 48-13 in a nonleague game at Huskie Field. The Mustangs (8-0) gained some revenge against the Huskies, who last season shocked Prosser 30-6 at Art Fiker Stadium. "Our kids were embarrassed about what happened last year," said Prosser coach Tom Moore. "The game was 30-6 and it wasn't even that close. So to come in here and beat a good Othello team is a big deal." The Mustangs dominated from the start, scoring on drives of 80 and 81 yards on their first two possessions. They led 21-6 at halftime and 41-6 after three quarters. "They overpowered us," said Othello wide receiver Jason Hafer. "We came out with a lot of energy and were flying around the field, but they jumped on us early and we never recovered." The Huskies (4-4) never had a chance, not with the way Prosser quarterback Kellen Moore was dissecting their defense. The 6-foot-1 sophomore completed 26 of 31 passes for 308 yards and four touchdowns without an interception. He now has 24 touchdown passes this season. "Kellen makes it easy for us; he puts the ball right on the money," said Prosser receiver Danny Lochrie, who had eight catches for 120 yards and a touchdown. "And we have so many great receivers for him to throw to." Prosser also has a couple standout running backs to add some balance. Ivan Merino rushed 13 times for 61 yards and a touchdown, and he also caught three short scoring passes from Moore. When Merino needed a breather, sophomore Jared Hancock took over and ran for 89 yards on 21 carries and also scored a TD. "The offensive line had a great game, giving Kellen a lot of time to throw and giving our backs some room to run," Coach Moore said. The Mustangs also dominated on defense. They intercepted Othello quarterback Wally Cantu three times. Prosser concludes Mid-Valley play by traveling to Wapato next Friday, then plays host to Ellensburg, which also is undefeated in league, in two weeks. And the scary thing is Coach Moore thinks his team has room to improve. "We're playing really well right now, but we can still get better," he said. "Our young guys are stepping up." Othello, meanwhile, is 3-2 in CWAC South play and can secure a playoff spot with a victory next Friday at Naches. "Coach (Roger Hoell) told us to flush this game down the toilet," said Hafer, who caught two TD passes Friday night. "We'll be ready next week."
