Prosser crushes Hanford (w/video highlights)This story was last updated Saturday, October 2nd, 2004 By Rene Ferran, Herald staff writer PROSSER -- Hanford thought its best chance of upsetting Prosser on Friday night depended on pushing the home team around. Instead, it was the third-ranked Mustangs who played bully, dominating the Falcons in a 56-20 Mid-Valley League victory at Art Fiker Stadium. "We said we needed to be physical tonight, but they were more physical," said Hanford coach Greg Sevigny, whose team dropped to 1-4, 0-2 in league play. "We got whipped." The Falcons got Prosser's attention by playing West Valley tough last week in a 14-12 road loss. That ensured that the Mustangs (5-0, 2-0) wouldn't look past them and toward next week's battle at West Valley. "Hanford has a lot of big kids and is physical,"Mustangs coach Tom Moore said. "This was a good test for us tonight." Prosser was efficient in its dismantling of the Falcons. The Mustangs scored on seven of their first eight possessions, including five drives of seven plays or more and five of 60 yards or more. Sophomore quarterback Kellen Moore, the coach's son, was just 11-of-24 for 181 yards, but he threw four first-half touchdown passes and distributed the ball to six different receivers. "He did a real good job of managing the game," Coach Moore said. "We moved the ball real well tonight. I was happy with how the offense played." Of course, it's easy to manage a game when you're under no pressure. The Mustangs' front line kept Moore's uniform clean and blew open holes for Ivan Merino (159 rushing yards, one touchdown) and Jared Hancock (79 yards, 2 TDs). "They did a great job of picking up everybody," Kellen said of his line. "We just did a great job of mixing it up with the run and the pass and spreading them out." On the other side, the Mustangs shut down Hanford's running game in the first half, limiting Travis Barnes -- the MVL's No. 2 rusher behind Merino -- to 47 yards on 18 carries. They also sacked Scott Stanhope four times, three in the first half. "Our focus was to stop the run," said senior lineman Peter Freepons, who had eight tackles and a sack. "We just had to maintain gaps." The Falcons looked early on as if they would hang with Prosser. They answered the Mustangs' first score, a 39-yard pass from Moore to Danny Lochrie, with a nine-play, 72-yard drive capped by a 7-yard TD pass from Stanhope to Tyler Cathey. But while Prosser kept scoring, Hanford's drives kept faltering. Twice, the Falcons got into Prosser territory without getting points. Then late in the first half, the Mustangs put the game away with a pair of lightning strikes. The first was a 35-yard TD pass from Moore to Merino with 28 seconds left, and on Hanford's first play after the ensuing kickoff, Lochrie jumped on an out route and returned the interception 35 yards for another score. Just like that, it was 42-7, and the rout was officially on. "We gave them 14 points right before halftime, which we said we couldn't do," Sevigny said. "They didn't have to work hard for their points tonight." Stanhope finished 12-of-22 for 208 yards with two TDs and two interceptions. Barnes ran for 102 yards on 26 carries, while tight end Max Collins caught six passes for 88 yards. Jorgen Gilbertson led Prosser's defense with nine tackles. Craig Martin had 1 1/2 sacks.
