Prep football — Washington leads Mustangs past Bulldogs
PROSSER — Friday's CWAC showdown between two 3-0 state-ranked teams turned out to be all Prosser. Literally. The top-ranked Mustangs scored five touchdowns in the opening period and rolled to a 70-0 victory over No. 9 Ellensburg at Fiker Stadium. Senior running back Drake Washington rushed for three scores and junior quarterback Jordan Durbin threw five TD passes for Prosser, which led 56-0 at halftime. Durbin, who threw for 244 yards, has 16 scoring passes in four games. Prosser's Kirby Moore scored three times — twice on pass receptions and once on an interception return. The junior wide receiver boosted his conference-leading TD total to 12. Cody Bruns hauled in three of Durbin's scoring passes, covering 34, 30 and 6 yards in the first half. Prosser's offense gained 464 yards and Ellensburg picked up 190. Freshman Michael McKinney rushed for 95 yards on 22 carries for the Bulldogs. Prosser (3-0, 4-0) will visit Toppenish next Friday while Ellensburg (2-1, 3-1) hosts Quincy.

Defense fuels Prosser rout of EllensburgThis story was published Saturday, September 22nd, 2007 By Jeff Morrow, Herald sports editor PROSSER -- The Prosser Mustangs are well-known statewide for their high-flying offense. They can put points on the board with incredible speed. Friday night was no exception, as the visiting Ellensburg Bulldogs got hammered 70-0 in a CWAC game at Fiker Stadium. And yes, the offensive unit was running on all cylinders. Jordan Durbin passed for 244 yards and five TDs. Steve Natho rushed for 103 yards, Drake Washington added 74 yards and three TD runs. Cody Bruns added seven catches for 144 yards and three TDs; Kirby Moore added six more receptions for 88 yards and two TDs. But let's talk about the defense for a change. The Mustangs forced three turnovers that keyed a 35-0 first-quarter lead. "They've got great speed," marveled Ellensburg coach Randy Affholter. "They played hard and took it to us." Prosser coach Tom Moore, an offensive guru, loves talking about his defense. "We have more speed than we had last year," Moore said. "We've got at least six college players on the defensive unit. Our four defensive backs (Bruns, Kirby Moore, Cade Wandling and Aaron Galvan) all can play college ball." Throw in linebackers Daniel Gannon and Keegan Pilot, and defensive end Kellen Crawford, and the Prosser D is downright scary. "(Gannon and Pilot), they can play," Affholter said. "They were all over the field tonight." The Mustangs defensive unit helped put this game away in the first quarter with the following script: -- Prosser's Gannon recovers an opening-drive Ellensburg fumble, and Washington scores on a 7-yard TD run 45 seconds later. -- Prosser's defense holds Ellensburg to three-and-out and a punt. Five plays later Durbin hits Bruns on a 35-yard TD strike and a 14-0 lead. On the Bulldogs' next series, Gannon gets in the face of Ellensburg quarterback Ethan Sterkel, who throws an interception to Kirby Moore that's returned 40 yards for a TD and a 21-0 lead. Bruns gets an interception on the next series; Washington runs in from 24 yards out three plays later for a 28-0 lead. After forcing another punt, Durbin hits Bruns for a 30-yard TD strike and a 35-0 lead. It's still in the first quarter, and the game is easily over. "We're not the biggest team, but we pride ourselves in being fast," Gannon said. Pilot agreed. "We just focus on our defensive line," he said. "We practice hard all week, and our scout team does a great job of giving us looks."
