Prosser's KirbyMoore catches a 59-yard touchdown pass against East Valley to score in the closing seconds of the first quarter at Art Fiker Stadium Friday, September 7, 2007.

PROSSER — What do you say about scoring six touchdowns? For Kirby Moore it was difficult to imagine let alone explain. His broad smile and a humble slump of the shoulders expressed it best. "Wow, it was just a real good game," offered Prosser's talented wide receiver. "Everything just sort of flowed for me."

Flowed into his hands and into the end zone as his huge game led the Mustangs to a 48-20 victory against East Valley in a game Friday many feel could have decided the CWAC title on opening day of conference play. More hauled in five touchdown passes — the first from Cody Bruns and the next four from Jordan Durbin — but the final tally was the one he'll remember most. Playing defensive back full-time this season, the
6-foot-3, 200-pound Moore intercepted a pass in the left flat in front of the Prosser bench and dashed 43 yards to cap his school-record night at Fiker Stadium.

"I've always wanted one of those," he said. "It's my first season of playing a lot of defense and I like it. I like it a lot." Prosser's two-headed quarterback monster leaned mostly to one side Friday night with Durbin enjoying a breakout performance.

Sitting out while Bruns directed the first two drives and three of the first five, Durbin nonetheless completed 15 of 18 passes for 247 yards and five touchdowns. He connected on his first eight attempts and his last seven in a row. "It was a great experience," said Durbin, whose scoring passes to Moore covered 59, 32, 13 and 3 yards. "Cody's one of the greatest athletes and our games are different. We take turns. And Kirby — he's just a phenomenal athlete." It's not like Bruns had a bad day. He threw for 47 yards and a score, rushed for 41 yards and caught three passes for 47 more yards with a touchdown as Prosser rolled up 494 total yards.

East Valley, which finished second to Prosser in the CWAC last year, tested Prosser's defense with 308 total yards and three scores. Southridge managed just one score against the Mustangs last week.

Quarterback Kevin Komstadius passed for 179 yards, engineering a scoring drive on EV's first possession, and Michael Rogstad caught two touchdown passes. Playmaker Kurt Russell grabbed six passes for 91 yards and returned eight kicks for 162 yards.

"I thought the four best receivers in the league were out there," Moore noted. "That made for a fun game. They're a tough team." Durbin's first scoring strike to Moore was a beauty, a low-level laser that covered more than half the 59-yard distance near the end of the first quarter.

"Jordan throws a quick ball and you have to be ready with the hands," Moore said. "Sometimes there's not much height to the ball, and that was a great throw. They were in a cover-2 (defense) and I got behind their corner — then the ball was there."

The Mustangs put in a solid effort on the ground — an emphasis for the offense this season — and Steve Natho led the way with 80 yards on 11 carries. East Valley (0-1, 1-1) will make its home debut next Friday against Ellensburg, while Prosser (1-0, 2-0) will resume CWAC play at Othello.

Prosser routs East Valley

PROSSER -- All-state wide receiver Cody Bruns may have earned the starting quarterback job for Prosser, but he may be able to return to his old position after Prosser's 48-20 win over East Valley on Friday at Art Fiker Stadium.

Junior quarterback Jordan Durbin, who had been sharing snaps with Bruns this season, lit up the East Valley defense for 247 yards and five touchdowns while completing 15 of 18 pass attempts.

"I've just been waiting for my opportunity," said Durbin, who was the backup for Kellen Moore in 2006. "I wanted to seize the opportunity and show everybody what I can do."

The 5-foot-11, 180-pound junior completed 8 of 9 passes in the first half after Bruns completed three passes for 47 yards on Prosser's first two drives of the game.

Bruns still managed to make an impact, rushing for 42 yards and hauling in three catches for 47 yards and a touchdown.

But Durbin took all the snaps in the second half, shredding the defense and impressing coach Tom Moore in the process.

"That's the best I've seen him play," Moore said. "We looked pretty good with him in there."

Durbin's performance gives Moore the option of returning Bruns to wide receiver opposite Kirby Moore, who caught a career-high five touchdown passes and amassed 148 yards receiving.

The notion of having both Bruns and Kirby Moore on the receiving end of Durbin's passes on a regular basis is an exciting one for Tom Moore.

"We've been struggling trying to find the right combination of guys out there," coach Moore said. "If both those guys are catching the ball, who are teams going to double cover?"

East Valley quarterback Kevin Komstadius didn't have a bad game, either. The two-year starter threw two touchdown passes and racked up 179 yards in the air.

But the stingy Prosser defense held East Valley in check on the ground, allowing only 85 yards rushing.

Prosser, on the other hand, had 192 yards on the ground, fulfilling one of Moore's preseason objectives of wanting the team to become more balanced offensively.

Senior Steven Natho led the Mustangs on the ground with 80 yards on 11 attempts after entering the game in the second quarter.

"He has been running real well for us," said Moore. "He reads his blocks and hits hard when he needs to."

On defense, the Mustangs may be without standout defensive back Cade Wandling next week after he sustained a concussion on a second-half kickoff.
