Prep Football — Prosser
shows total package against EV
The thing is, Prosser is so good, so well-drilled, so finely tuned, that an observer doesn't come away from one of their blowout victories — like their 40-3 dismantling of a good East Valley team on Friday — talking only about that prolific quarterback and that explosive wide receiver.
There's the offensive line — center Bob Humphries, guards Jeremy Blasdel and Ryan Anderson, tackles Ben Gibson and Calvin Clarke — that gives that prolific quarterback time to lope around, looking for the most-open of those gifted receivers. There's that defense that, in two weeks, has allowed a perennial Class 3A playoff team (Southridge) and a perennial 2A playoff team (East Valley) a grand total of 10 points. "We set defensive goals every game. We don't want anybody lighting up the scoreboard on us," said Humphreys, a stellar defensive end who spent much of the night in the face of — or climbing off of — Red Devils quarterback Kevin Komstadius. There is the brigade of good-hands receivers that quarterback gets to throw to, even if you don't count that one guy — the guy who has now had back-to-back 200-yards-plus receiving games. But, of course, nobody can see Prosser without taking special note of
that guy — Cody Bruns, whose "Oh geez, the Bruns kid's amazing," marveled East Valley coach Barry Reifel. "He can make something out of nothing in a hurry." And "nothing" — short passes underneath the deep-dropping coverage — was precisely what Bruns' splendid quarterback, Kellen Moore, was taking advantage of with the speedy Bruns. "We knew they were gonna drop the house on us, dropping everybody back into coverage," Moore said after a surgeon-like 29-for-37, 327-yard, four-touchdown night that lasted only three quarters. "I think we did a good job of taking what they were giving us."
Bubba Hancock and Kody Frank ran for touchdowns for the Mustangs. Moore hit Bruns and Serg Torres with one touchdown pass each and found younger brother Kirby Moore with two — before the younger Moore limped off early in the second quarter with what the Mustangs are hoping is not a serious knee injury.
"Both of the (team) doctors thought it was a sprain," said Mustang coach Tom Moore, who is also Kirby's father. "His ACL's fine; it looks like he may have sprained his MCL a little bit." If it's just a sprain, that will generate huge sighs of relief around the Prosser faithful, because the Kellen-to-Kirby Moore aerial circus is a very productive one. But even without it, the Mustangs would still be very good. "That is a heckuva team," said Reifel, whose team's only scoring was a 25-yard field goal by Adam Sloon. "We really improved a lot from last week. We did. But you don't stop a team like that. You just try to slow them down." And that is — very definitely — not an easy thing to do. Moore throws 4 TDs in Prosser's 40-3 victoryThis story was published Saturday, September 9th, 2006 By the Herald staff MOXEE-- A week after mauling 3A Southridge, Prosser began its assault on the 2A ranks Friday night with a 40-3 CWAC road win against East Valley. Kellen Moore completed 29 of 36 passes for 331 yards and four touchdowns -- two to brother Kirby Moore -- as the Mustangs picked apart a solid team that reached the 2A state tournament last year. Cody Bruns caught 13 passes for 200 yards that included a 1-yard TD reception in the third quarter. "It's just their consistent play -- it's such a consistent attack," said East Valley coach Barry Reifel. "We were excited that they didn't really bust any big plays on us, but they controlled the tempo of the game." East Valley cut the lead to 14-3 early in the second quarter, but the Mustangs scored the next 26 points to close out the game.
